Up for a bit of mock-macho manoeuvres before the onslaught of parenthood, Vaughn agrees to go on a deerstalking trip in the Highlands with his friend Marcus (Michael Fassbender-lookey-likey Martin McCann), a chum from the boys’ boarding school days who now makes serious bank in the financial sector. In the foundational first section, we meet Vaughn (Lowden), a nice regular guy living in a smart street near the park in Glasgow, who is about to become a father with his partner (Olivia Morgan). That’s a point worth stressing should you consider watching this on Netflix, given on that platform it’s so much easier to skip on to something else if the opening 10 minutes of a film fails to grab you. Just when you might expect Palmer to break out the fake blood, the film goes unexpectedly, and quite literally quiet, after a somewhat plodding first third. As he builds up courage and slowly pulls the trigger, something unexpected leaves the two men shell-shocked and fighting for their futures.Anchored by a brace of range-flaunting performances from its two leads Jack Lowden and Martin McCann, Calibre evolves unexpectedly into a moral puzzle about the limits of friendship and forgiveness. Traveling deep into the dense, quiet woods, the two men stumble upon a deer, with Marcus encouraging Vaughn as he sets up to take his first shot. The next morning, a hungover Vaughn is awoken by an eager Marcus, as they are already running behind in their planned adventures. After Marcus and Kara leave together for the evening, Vaughn and Iona continue to drink as he opens up about his fears of becoming a father. Ahead of their hunting adventure, the two men pop into the local pub and meet some townspeople, including community leader Logan ( Tony Curran) and locals Kara and Iona. Marcus, an avid hunter, is keen to teach Vaughn how to do so. ![]() The two drive from the city to the remote Scottish Highlands for a weekend of “stalking”. With his first child on the way, Vaughn ( Lowden) decides to take a weekend trip with his childhood schoolmate, Marcus ( McCann). ![]()
